Beyond Reporting - Systematic Approaches to Sustained Corporate Responsibility

Abstract
Corporate Responsibility (CR) is undisputed as an essential component of any successful business strategy. In addition, the transparent disclosure and reporting of CR information to a wide range of interested stakeholders is a requirement in the current market place - a part of the Licence to Operate.

However, CR as an all encompassing business management approach is still widely misunderstood and generally implemented poorly and inefficiently. Programmes tend to be implemented in isolation and inconsistent methods deployed.

CR is nothing more than a structured and sustained approach to the management of all risks in relation to stakeholders of the business. Therefore, an effective CR strategy and programme is one that is treated like all other corporate risk management disciplines and uses best practice for standardised risk management.

Internationally recognised standards such as ISO 9001 and 14001 provide best practice through a structured Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach to risk management. The application of this best practice approach to all CR elements within an overarching CR framework will result in sustained and long-term business value and success.

In this paper it is explained how a best practice International Standards Organisation (ISO) management systems framework approach can be applied to all CR elements and how a software solution can deliver substantial benefits and value to the organisation by reducing risk, ensuring compliance and improving performance. Thus, the primary thrust will be going beyond reporting and a basic compliance focus towards placing CR management and software solutions at the heart of the business.

Entropy International Acquired by BSI Group

On June 1st 2006, Entropy International Ltd was acquired by BSI Group - the global standards and certification body. Entropy's software solutions are highly complementary to BSI's portfolio of business services and products and both companies, as well as sharing a commitment to raising standards of business and sustainability, see this as an excellent opportunity to accelerate and expand their business.

After having collaborated on several customer projects in recent years and recognizing the synergies between the two companies, Stevan Breeze, CEO, BSI (left) and Hewitt Roberts, CEO, Entropy International (right) agreed that the time was right to take the relationship to the next logical level. Entropy International is now operating as an independent division of BSI Group under the name of BSI Entropy International. The Entropy System will continue to be developed in line with our roadmap strategy and the input of BSI will considerably broaden its application and provide deeper domain knowledge.

Success at the Strategic Risk Awards

BSI Entropy International's Managing Director, Carl Mead (second from left), and Business Development Manager, Paul Stanfield (second from right), attended the prestigious Strategic Risk 2006 European Risk Management Awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London as guests of our clients, Diageo, who we are delighted to say were nominated for three awards and won two. Joan White, Director of Corporate Governance (left) and Angus King, Change Manager (right) were both delighted at their success and we are especially pleased on their behalf for the award in the "Most Effective Use of Technology" category as the software platform that they have been using for their Licence to Operate initiative is in fact the Entropy System. BSI Entropy International is also proud that the Entropy System was highly commended in the Risk Management Product of the Year category.
