Introduction
The Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) regime is a Europe-wide regulatory system introduced in the UK by the Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) Regulations (SI2000:1973) in 2000. This new regime for the regulation of pollution from industrial sources is developed from, and supersedes, the Integrated Pollution Control (IPC) regime originally introduced in the Environmental Protection Act of 1990.
The addition of the word 'prevention' indicates that the regulations have moved away from the focus on 'end-of-pipe' control techniques to those further up the management chain, including assessments of management techniques, raw material inputs and waste outputs, as well as environmental fate and impacts. The PPC regime will cover nearly 7000 installations in the UK by the time it is fully implemented; by contrast, IPC covered about 2500 processes.
Entropy International is delighted to have won a Bronze Award in the Small Business Category of the Environment Business Journal's annual Business Achievement Awards and also to have made it through to the final rounds in Strategic Risk magazine's 2006 European Risk Management Awards.
The bronze award from the Environmental Business Journal recognises Entropy International's substantial sales growth in 2005, the opening of the North America office and the winning of a Green Apple award for environmental best practice. Entropy International's North American Business Development Manager, Rob Polito (pictured), collected the award at the Environment Business Journal annual summit in San Diego in early March.
The Entropy System itself has been short listed in the Risk Management Product of the Year category by the Strategic Risk magazine's European Risk Management Awards judging panel. The winner will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony in London on 4th May 2006, and our Managing Director, Carl Mead, will be there hoping to collect the award.

The annual User Conference is the event where Entropy staff, clients and alliances get together and share experiences of their use of the Entropy System. The 2006 conference, with the theme of 'Growth and Development', will be taking place on September 14th and 15th at the elegant Castle Hotel in Royal Windsor, UK, and will be focusing on the evolution of both the company and the System.
Previous events have been a resounding success and we are looking forward to seeing clients old and new at what we hope will be the best event yet. Further information regards registration and conference content will be available shortly.
During the first quarter of 2006, Product Development focused on implementing new and improved functionality in a number of areas that had been highlighted by our User Community. As a result of our collaboration with our clients and end users, the following features are now nearing completion:
Audit and Compliance scorecards in the Dashboard - compliance scorecards can be created in the Dashboard Performance tab using audit compliance scores for traffic light reporting, while access to question-level audit scores, non conformances, recommendations, action plans and benchmarking has been improved.
Email notification for incidents - a pre-determined group of users can be provided with instant and automatic email notifications when records with certain characteristics are added to the system (SQL Server 2005 is required for this feature).
Enhanced Monitoring and Performance Management capabilities - corporate monitoring records and their readings can now be validated and locked for specified periods of time. If a reading breaches validation, or an approved reading is edited, a mandatory explanation will be required and there will also be the capability to report on unusual and unapproved or approved readings, as well as readings changed after approval.
Training history and audit trail - reports can be generated for training completed on a specified date; the full text version of the procedure a person was trained on can be retrieved; dates and number of times people are trained in a procedure or course can be viewed; and records for staff that move to other departments or leave the company can be maintained.
Improved User Administration - users can quickly and easily be provided with access to one or many sites and/or site groups in Roles and Responsibilities; access to corporate reporting can be restricted by Site Group; the record list of users can be filtered by Access Profile; and all work areas for a person's sites can be edited in one place.
Stakeholder Engagement - this will now be supported by the addition of a 'Received From' link to Associated Organization records to enable reporting of external communications by stakeholder.
Improved document control process for Policies and Procedures - there is a new process that takes a document from draft through to approved and published status, with review and archiving capabilities, within the system.
In line with Entropy International's expansion plans for 2006, six months after the opening of the Ottawa office the company has moved again into a prestigious new office suite within the same building in the Kanata Research Park, and looks forward to receiving visitors there.
